Things to Do on Face to Face Day: Run a 5K

Activity: Run a 5K

Amount of people needed: You can run by yourself or with a buddy. There are also running groups, so you might want to do a little research to see if there are any nearby you.

Time Spent: 20 minutes - 1 hour

How to: Map out a running route on MapMyRun.com. FYI, a 5K is 3.1 miles. Start running! If this is your first time running, try running for 1 minute and walking for 2 minutes. Repeat the intervals until you reach your finish mark!

Can you kick it up a notch? Try sprinting to a light post, then, recovering with a slower pace to the next light post, and continuing these intervals until the finish.

To really challenge yourself, try entering into a 5K race for Face to Face Day. Use the Runner’s World RaceFinder to find a race on the weekend of March 26-27th.

Things to Do on Face to Face Day: Play Fugitive

Activity: Fugitive Game

Amount of People Needed: 6-12

Time Spent: 2-4 Hours

Rules: Split your group into fugitives and police. The fugitives are completely on foot, and the police can have 2 drivers. Map out a start and finish point. The fugitives get a 5 minute head start. Then, the police try to “capture” the fugitives by tagging them. The captured fugitives should be picked up by the drivers. If even one fugitive makes it to the finish point, then all the fugitives win. If the police capture all the fugitives before the finish, then the police team win.

TL;DR Get a group of friends together to play a game of tag city-wide.

Why should I give up technology for a day?

Written by Shannon from the Face to Face Team

Technology, especially social media, has become such an integrated part of our lives. Often, I find out news about my friends online, before seeing them in person or hearing their voice on the phone. To an extent, there has been a technology overload. Do I really need to know about my co-worker’s mid-day snack? Or how did I end up “friending” a person I met once on vacation? Do I really want to know about their social life, and do they need to know about mine?

In truth, I love technology. Currently, my team and I take classes online at Fort Hays State University. I’m also the web and social media manager at my job. I have my own fitness blog, and I am an avid computer gamer. However, there are those days when I feel a strain at the amount of time I spend wired. I know the longer I stay online in one day, the less I accomplish on my “offline” activities. By mid-terms, I find myself so connected that I get on edge and feel drained by the end of the day.

Here are the top reasons why I want to give up technology for Face to Face Day.

  • To give my eyes and mind a break. Even though it might seem so, the internet is drains energy. By sitting at a computer all day, I feel my back ache and my head start to numb by the end of the day. I feel so much better when I take a step back, and go outside to breath in the fresh air.
  • To try new activities. There is a lot of variety online, and sometimes this variety appears to be enough, but watching someone do something exciting online isn’t the same as participating in something exciting in real life. To feel accomplished, I want to try a new activity on Face to Face Day.
  • To re-connect to friends and family. It’s nice to get up-to-date information from my friends and family online, but of course, there is only a grain of information from one post or tweet. I want to spend the day deep in conversation with friends and family.

Join me on the weekend of March 26-27th, and give up technology for 24 hours. Attend the event on facebook, and share it with your friends. Why do you want to give up technology for a day?

What to do for Face to Face day?

Here are a list of 10 ideas for activities to do, while you are taking a break from the internet:

    • Volunteer at your local pet shelter, and take dogs for a walk. This will make your heart and feet happy!
    • Try out a new fitness class. Ever wanted to rock climb? Find a local gym and have at it.
    • Visit your mom, in person. She will appreciate you for it.
    • Bring out your inner mad-scientist, and build a model rocket.
    • Take a leap, a fall, and an easy save with a sky-diving session.
    • Hike up a mountain….er, hill. Find a local park with hiking paths and explore!
    • Make the biggest ice cream sundae ever, and try to eat it before it melts away.
    • Catch up on some zzz’s, and take an afternoon nap.
    • Go fishing, yup, that’s right, fishing.
    • Meet your friends at a coffee shop or pub and relax.

More to come later on in the week, and let us know your ideas! Whether you are doing something exciting, caring, or even, mundane (gasp!), tell us how you will be spending Face to Face Day!

What is Face to Face Day?

Face to Face Day is a chance to step away from the computer, take a break from social networking for 24 hours, and live life unplugged by participating in activities with friends and family face to face. Join us the weekend of March 26-27th.

This day is all about trying new activities, exploring your town, and being able to unwind from our technology driven world. To participate, think of activity ideas for the day, and join our facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/facetofaceday. Then, share your activity ideas, invite friends to join you on the day, and post photos of your day. After the event is over, share your experience with life unplugged.

Yes, yes, we understand the humor behind promoting an non-facebook day with facebook and social technology. We, as many of you, still love our social networks, however this day is about trying new things that you can’t do while digitally connected, and appreciating your loved ones by taking the time to meet with them face to face.

It has become appalling obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity
